Here’s How That Massive ‘Interstellar’ Wave Was Made

In a dramatic scene from Interstellar, the space crew was nearly overwhelmed by a massive wave on a distant planet. The filmmakers and actor Wes Bentley discuss the lighting and composite work required to create this visually stunning effect. Shooting on-location in Iceland, the wave sequence was filmed using a mobile stunt rig attached to an ATV stationed in a lake. Physics simulations helped the VFX team simulate a realistic 4,000-foot wave. VFX supervisor Paul Franklin explains the complexities involved in the production, including the detailed simulation of water’s behavior using physics simulations to create realistic wave patterns that splash and sweep the spacecraft away, and how the water surges over the hull. The challenge was integrating the wave details seamlessly into the photography on location. The location was awkward to film due to the vast, open space. Interstellar is now available on digital HD and will be released March 31 on Blu-Ray.
